High school scoreboard for Jan. 3
The Browns’ Joel Bitonio, Amari Cooper, Myles Garrett, David Njoku and Denzel Ward were selected for this year’s Pro Bowl. The honorees were announced Jan. 3. Bitonio, Cooper and Garrett were voted as starters. The following players are alternates: Corey Bojorquez, Dustin Hopkins, Grant Delpit, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Ethan Pocic and Wyatt Teller. This is Bitonio’s sixth straight Pro Bowl appearance. The last Browns player named to six Pro Bowls in a row was Gene Heckersin from 1966-71. Garrett is in his fifth Pro Bowl. Jake Gaudet scored the go-ahead goal 3:15 into the third period, and Jet Greaves made 29 saves as the Monsters beat host Toronto, 2-1, on Jan. 3. Carson Meyer scored the Monsters’ first goal midway through the second period to tie the game at 1-1. It was his 14th of the season. Gaudet’s tally put Cleveland ahead, and Greaves kept the Marlies off the scoreboard the rest of the way. The Monsters (22-8-1-0) have won eight of their past nine. They play their next two games at Rochester, beginning Jan 5.

After winning in the last second of overtime in their previous game, there was no such drama in the Monsters’ contest at Grand Rapids on Dec. 31. The Griffins dominated, 5-1, ending the Monsters’ seven-game winning streak. The Griffins scored the first five goals of the game. They kept the Monsters off the scoreboard until 7:15 remaining in the third period, when Mikael Pyyhtia scored on a power play. Trey Fix-Wolansky and Marcus Bjork assisted on Pyyhtia’s goal.
