For the fourth time in four years, Oberlin is searching for a new football coach.
On Dec. 18, it was announced Phoenix football coach Mark Campos stepped down after one season.
“I am torn to say that I have resigned my position as (Oberlin) head football coach,” he said in a statement released on the “Lorain County’s Friday Night Lights” Facebook page. “The players on the team are awesome young men that I will greatly miss coaching. The character, work ethic and perseverance that you showed will lead to successful futures.”
In his departure, Campo showed his appreciation to Oberlin Athletic Director Bryce Johnson, who also confirmed the news.
“I am very appreciative of the support I received from parents and (the) booster club. I also want to thank Mr. Johnson, Athletic Director for his efforts. He is absolutely the right person for the job,” he said. “I resigned because of philosophical differences of what I feel needs to be in place to give the football program the best chance to have a season next fall and the best chance of having a middle school football program. I wish everyone the best moving forward.”
Oberlin dealt with a multitude of injuries throughout the 2023 season, in which it went 0-9 (0-6 in LC8).
As a Division VI program and the injuries that it had, Oberlin’s home game against Wellington in Week 7 was canceled.
