A 19-year-old Lorain man is headed to prison for his role in the drive-by shooting of Shayne Edwards last year, killing the boy while he slept in his bedroom.
Jose Campos was the driver in the early morning hours Sept. 12, 2022, when Hezekiah Shepherd, 17, also of Lorain, fired a handgun into an Elyria residence while in the passenger seat, killing the 14-year-old Elyria High School student while he slept in his bed.
As the vehicle passed by the 435 Third St. home where Shayne was asleep, a bullet went through the wall and struck him in the head.
Shepherd fired five rounds from a 9 mm handgun into the home.
Campos plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter with a firearm specification, a first-degree felony, and four counts of felonious assault, second-degree felonies.
Lorain County Common Pleas Judge Christopher Rothgery sentenced Campos to eight to 11 years and six months in prison on Nov. 6.
Campos received four days of credit toward his sentence from when he was arrested on Oct. 14, 2022.
Rothgery also ordered Campos to pay all costs of prosecution as well as court-appointed counsel fees.
On Oct. 11, Rothgery sentenced Shepherd to 23 years to life in prison.
Shepherd was tried as an adult.
After serving the mandatory 23 years, Shepherd could be considered for parole.
Lorain man who fatally shot Denzyl ‘Zell’ Williams sentenced to prison
Police said the shooting was in retaliation for the vandalism of a memorial honoring 14-year-old Denzel Williams of Lorain, who was murdered in 2020 at Lorain’s Oakwood Park.
Campos and Shepherd were members of the Zell Gang or ZG, which derived its name from Denzel Williams, police said.
Details of the investigation indicated Edwards wasn’t the teens’ target, but another male who they believed was in the residence.
The two had hoped to send a message to their target by means of the drive-by shooting, police said.
