More than 500 Lorain children and their parents found treats around every corner at Horizon Science Academy of Lorain’s Trunk-or-Treat event Oct. 25.

The annual event included several community organizations, activities, crafts, a scavenger hunt, costumes and, of course, candy at the Horizon Science Academy campus located at 760 Tower Blvd. in Lorain.

A new straw maze in the gym especially was enjoyed by the younger children.

“Our kids love it,” said Community Engagement Coordinator Jessika Varner. “They talked about it for weeks prior.”

Varner said the event was free but ticketed to manage supplies.

“We don’t charge our families, so that’s where all the community support helps,” Varner added. “It’s gotten bigger over the years.”

Among the many community supporters was Mayor Jack Bradley, who dressed as Ken to accompany his granddaughter’s Barbie.

Organizations involved with the event included Achieve Credit Union, Fifth Third Bank, El Centro De Servicios Soc, Cricket Wireless, Chick-fil-A, Lorain Public Library System and Lorain Police Department.

Papa Johns Pizza also sold pies to families and returned a portion of the purchase price to the school.

Costume contest winners included a group of elementary school teachers dressed as characters from Mario Kart.

Science teacher Debbie Drda dressed as a butterfly and required visitors to her table to answer a question about pollinators to earn their candy.

Horizon Science Academy opened in 2009 and serves students from all over Lorain County.

As a K-12 charter school, it is tuition free and slots fill quickly.

Current enrollment is 820, and the school has been named among the best in the state, Varner said.

Applications open in January and usually fill before May 1, she added.

“It is difficult to get a spot because our kids do stay,” Varner said.

Horizon’s next event is a Thanksgiving drive from Nov. 1-15.

Donations of nonperishable Thanksgiving foods are appreciated.

Cash donations also can be made so perishable items can be purchased.

Donations can be dropped off at the school or made online at www.horizonlorain.org.

The school’s upcoming Black History Month events will be open to the public.
